Maria asks…
how can i lift weights for lean muscle, but not turn all buff looking?
I’ve been working out for a long time, been in various sports since 6th grade. I am now a senior, and i deside not to play sports this year, but i want to stay in shape. Most of the drills we did in all the sports were strength based training. I know if i continue these workouts i will only get more bigger by gaining muscle mass. I want to be healthy and fit, but i don’t want to look like a muscle woman. I rather the lean muscle look i think too much muscle on a woman looks bad. So, what types of exercises should i do to keep in shape, but not look like a man haha. Thanks

Workout answers:
Most women just don’t get all “muscly” unless they take steroids. They can get very strong, but don’t have as much of the male hormones that bulk up the muscle mass, and a natural layer of fat under the skin softens any hard edges in a lady’s look.
Strong women look great – but look like women.

Is it possible for a woman to gain 40 pounds in a few months?
I am 19 years old, a female, 5’3″, and a very light 85 pounds. I want to gain muscle mass and tone key muscles (like abs, legs, chest, and buttocks). I am indeed underweight for my age, and I want to know exactly how can I gain at least 40 pounds within a few months? I plan on working out 5 days a week (taking Sat, and Sun. off) and I want to know a good plan on working certain muscle groups per day. What are excellent foods to help me build muscle and gain lean weight? Is it possible for me to gain 40 pounds in a few months?
NO I am not pregnant! I’m trying to gain muscle mass and tone. And I seriously want tips and advice, not “eat like a fat turd and turn it into muscle” or the like. And No it is not dangerous to try and gain weight because many people are doing so as this moment. Seriously I want ADVICE and tips. Read the question THOROUGHLY and answer with common sense and intelligence. Not just for the points. Thank you.

Workout answers:
It’s not not possible..

Women over 40 weight gain problems?
I watch Dr. Oz and he’s great and very helpful with his Women Over 40 shows. It’s known that you can eat the same way from 30′s to 40′s but start gaining weight for no reason after 40. Stress causes cortisol which could be the culprit but I do notice unnecessary weight gain. It was said on his show that you start to lose muscle mass so strengthening weight exercising should be incorporated. It’s a wonder I have time for the treadmill so how can I make time to do intense muscle strengthening when I don’t have weights? Is using body resistence effective enough and do you need to skip a day just like using weights? Thanks.

Workout answers:
Well you could go on a wonderful cycle ride and breathe in all that clean air lol. Then the next day just do some push ups against a wall or even some isometric resistance exercise would be okay – you just stand about 1 foot away ( arms also 1 foot apart) from a wall and pretend to push it over with ALL your strength for 10 reps BUT hold that tension for 20 seconds each time,5 sets should be enough to stimulate your arms, chest etc, don’t forget to take your calcium supplements to keep your bones strong and to stave off osteoporosis in your older years, good luck..
